This list of NYC-area yoga studios includes gyms and other locations that specialize in yoga or offer several yoga classes as well as organizations that sponsor specific needs classes. Please click here if you are looking for our NYC specific needs yoga listings. Most gyms and community centers, as well as many spas, also offer yoga classes. There also are listings on MeetUp.com and craigslist.org. After the lists, organized by borough, are other NYC-area yoga resources. The following NYC-based organizations offer training and programs for specific needs yoga.
- Elahi Yoga
Elahi Yoga welcomes children with and without special needs to participate in their classes. Please contact them to learn more and/or to discuss how your child can participate.
- The Lineage Project
The Lineage Project teaches at-risk and incarcerated New York City teenagers awareness-based practices, such as yoga and meditation, to help consciously manage stress, increase self-awareness, and cultivate compassion and commitment to nonviolent engagement with their communities (and they train teachers to do this work).
- School for Compassionate Action
SCA offers yoga and meditation training for and experience teaching at-risk youth and adults, people in recovery programs, and those living with chronic pain and illness.
- The Urban Zen Foundation
The Urban Zen Foundation offers two teacher training programs with well known experts in the field. The Urban Zen Integrative Therapist program is a 500-hr program focused on integrating multiple therapies—including yoga therapy, aromatherapy, reiki, nutrition, and education about death and dying—into patient care. A 200-hr teacher training program also is offered.
- Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis
All Yoga Union classes are adaptive (contact them to make sure the class is appropriate and that your needs can be accommodated) and it is the first yoga center to focus on backcare and scoliosis.
