Lotus.Mgx Lamp Series By Janne Kyttanen For Materialise
Here's some practical red lotus-inspired art, even if it's not at all in my budget. (It also comes in some other colors.) Lotus.Mgx Lamp Series By Janne Kyttanen For Materialise Here's the description ... "Combining art and technology and drawing on the forms of nature, materialise has produced these exceptional floor and table lamps. each lamp resembles a simple and elegant lotus blossom; belying the complex mathematics and high-tech rendering techniques that are used to create these stunning pieces. These lamps were created through the use of rapid prototyping technology, which is a 3D material printing process allowing for an unlimited freedom of design far beyond the capacity of traditional manufacturing processes. *.mgx is the file extension for materialise's proprietary software. Each product produced by materialise is rendered from a unique *.mgx file which accompanies your product on a cd rom. you can reproduce your product by sending the product's *.mgx file to materialise." Red Lotus Art by Paul Heussenstamm
Red LotusIf you are not familiar with the incredible, amazing art of Paul Heussenstamm, his Mandalas.com web site definitely is worth a visit. His story is inspirational as well. He has created some works that focus on a red lotus, works that have goddesses with red lotuses, mandalas with red lotus overtones, and more. Several sizes of prints, as well as original work, are available at the site. Labels: bric-a-brac

Birth Lotus by Waltzing Dog Quilting Arts
This red lotus-centered Birth Lotus is a photograph of part of a quilted pillow created by Wendy at Waltzing Dog Quilting Arts. She created the pillow while pregnant, "This image was powerful for me, and created a focus for my birth experience." The image is available from the artist as a stunning greeting card, as an 8x10 print, as other prints at imagekind, and on items at her cafepress shop. Labels: bric-a-brac

Red Lotus Kokeshi
A limited edition print of this Red Lotus Kokeshi by Maeve Donohue is irresistable. Isn't she cute? The artist's description of the symbolism, etc. is good: "The Lotus flower is held sacred in the Hindu, Buddhist, and Egyptian religions. The Lotus is a type of water lily, which rises from muddy waters to blossom, making it a symbol of purity and resurrection. In Buddhism the Red Lotus symbolizes the original nature of the heart (hrdaya). It is the lotus of love, compassion, passion, activity and all the qualities of the heart. Kokeshi folk art dolls, once made of spare wood by Japanese farmers, are given as tokens of love and friendship to family and friends. This limited edition red lotus Kokeshi print is the perfect gift for anyone you love in the process of unfolding enlightenment." Labels: bric-a-brac

The Images at the A Red Lotus Site
As I'm stuck on art and photos for a while, it seems appropriate to mention the images on the A Red Lotus site. Sometime early on, I decided it might liven up the site to include a little bit of red lotus art near the bottom of each page. As I'm not an artist and wanted to be mindful of copyright legalities, this could have been a challenging task. I found a lot of original images at flickr and photobucket. Flickr is quite careful about sharing and allows the person who uploaded the image to decide what types of sharing (links, embedding, email, etc.) they would prefer for their images. Photobucket is designed to enable people to both share and modify images and, unfortunately, participants there are not careful about copyrights or ownership. Therefore, most of the red lotus images on the bottoms of pages at the A Red Lotus site are from flickr, wherein the person providing the image has indicated it is okay to use it (when properly linked). Red Lotus Bric-A-Brac, Art, and More
Previously, I promised I'd write to share some resources for finding red lotus items (or, of course, items along any theme you'd like). As you probably can tell, the sites I visit range from low-end on up. I use froogle a lot to help me find items to purchase online. I also use google image searches. For t-shirts, posters, mugs, cards, and a few other types of items, Cafe Press, Zazzle, and red bubble have items with designs by all types, artists and non-artists alike. For original art for sale by the artist, imagekind, ArtByUs, Boundless Gallery, red bubble, and Fine Art America are places to start. For original items—including art, jewelry, and every imaginable type of bric-a-brac a person might create—Etsy (or eBay) might have what you're looking for. Then, of course, there also are places such as Novica and Overstock.com that sell art for artists worldwide. Please forward suggestions for other places to shop. Labels: bric-a-brac

lotus or water lily? and isn't that pink?
Okay, this keeps popping up. Is it a lotus or is it a water lily and is there a difference? By some accounts and some common uses, a lotus is a special water lily. By other accounts, there is no difference. By other accounts they are totally different. So, what's correct??? As far as I can tell, Egyptian and European lotuses are Nymphaeaceae, a type of water lily (with notched lily pads). Egyptian lotuses appear to bloom much farther above the water than European ones. Another type of water lily, Nuphar, also is sometimes called a lotus; it's a small cousin of the Egyptian lotus. Apparently, some other types of water lilies are not commonly referred to as lotuses. Nymphaeaceae are different from Chinese and Indian lotuses, Nelumbo, which are not water lilies (although they have lily pads that are full circles, along with the lotus seed pod). Therefore, the classic lotus familiar to most in the yoga world is not a water lily. So ... I have decided to be inclusive and include flowers referred to both as red lotus and red water lily in the "bric-a-brac" listings in this blog and in items I purchase. That leads to another question!! Is a red lotus red? Actually, many species referred to as "red lotus" are a deep pink. Therefore, you are likely to see some deep pink lotuses referred to here as red. I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm guessing the book Waterlilies and Lotuses has some of the answers, and it has tons of great photographs. You can preview it with google.

Lotusteich Photograph by Bruno Baumann
This stunning red lotus photograph, Lotusteich (Lotus Pond), is by photographer and author Bruno Baumann. He has made this breathtaking work (and other amazing photographs from his travels) available as a poster, as (very high quality but affordable) cards and postcards, and as a wonderful blank book notebook. He also was very helpful in setting up so people can easily order from the United States. Labels: bric-a-brac

A few places have posters with red (or deep pink, depending on the photo of the poster) lotuses by J Nemo (Sevilla on the left and Grenada on the right). I have not been able to find out anything about this artist. A few other flower-themed posters also are available. If you have information, please email me. Labels: bric-a-brac

Sho Kannon Zushi with Lotus Doors
Isn't this tiny antique piece (which includes a red lotus) enchanting? It's only 3.5" x 1.5" x 1". The figure is Kannon, a god/goddess of compassion (Avalokiteshvara or Quan Yin), and the object is a portable shrine. (No, this is not an item I've purchased; with an antique gallery price, it will stay at home in the Robyn Buntin Gallery of Honolulu for now. :) Sho Kannon Zushi with Lotus Doors Labels: bric-a-brac

Lotus Screens
I was thinking of buying a red-lotus themed room divider. I found these two and they're not quite the same. Hmmmm ... I suspect the first one is the original manufacturer (it's solid birch wood), but the second one seems to have a more consistent color scheme (it's a plywood "wall screen" and also is ready-to-hang). With shipping, they're in the same price range.
For those of you with much deeper pockets, check out the beautiful original art of this lotus-inspired screen. Lotus by Nola Seidel oil on MDF board 2 panel laquered room divider screen with Australian timber frameLabels: bric-a-brac

Lotus Blank Book / Journal
I bought this lotus blank book / journal from Tibetan Treasures, and it is stunningly beautiful -- much more than the picture can portray. The cover is three-dimensional and catches the light. The spine has a row of lotus flowers. (Note, it does not have the magnetic closure mentioned in their description. It does have the acid-free sustainable forest paper, ribbon, and pouch.)I looked it up and the book is part of a series based on the walls of Lamayuru Monastery made by PaperBlanks, which makes a wide variety of beautiful blank books like this. (Vegans note that their "old leather" items are faux. :) Labels: bric-a-brac

Healing Artwork - Lotus Chakra Meditation Series by Astrid Lee
Lotus Chakra Meditation Series by Astrid LeeIn this high quality Fine Art print series, 'Lotus Chakra Meditation', each lotus relates to a particular chakra in color, sanskrit symbol and depiction. Meditate on an individual chakra or on balancing two chakras in sets of two companion artworks: Set I: Sacral & Root Chakras, Set II: Crown & Solar Plexus Chakras, Set III: 3rd Eye & Throat Chakras, Set IV: Chakra of your choice & Heart Chakra. A full set with seven chakras also is available. Beyond the self-healing power of meditation, divine healing energy is 'woven' into the fabric of these art pieces; each painting and print received a Reiki treatment and contain a healing for all who see the work, as appropriate and accepted. (I've placed an order for two, the red lotus for the first, root, chakra and the magenta lotus for the eighth, soul, chakra.) Labels: bric-a-brac
