Yoga for Mental Wellness
9:30 - 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays at The Breathing Project with Elizabeth Plapinger

Taught by Elizabeth Plapinger, with guest teachers Bess Abrahams and Lori Ruth Federman

Yoga for Mental Wellness is a yoga class devoted to people of any age or fitness level who suffer from emotional distress or mental illness. Anyone experiencing such distress is welcome. A typical class involves movement (asana), attention to breathing, attunement to the present moment, deep relaxation, and mindful, nonjudgmental assessment of the effect of practice on the mind, body and breath. Special classes with visiting teachers explore the role of chanting, other mind-body approaches, massage and body work in emotional, mental and physical wellbeing.

Experience and research suggest that yoga can be a powerful tool for addressing emotional and mental illness. For many of us, the regular practice of yoga can lift the mood, reduce stress, enhance problem-solving, improve strength and flexibility, lessen fatigue and increases energy. Join us in this experiential practice and see how yoga works for you!

The class is by donation, with a suggested fee of $5.00. No one is turned away for inability to pay. Yoga for Mental Wellness was founded in 2004 by yoga teacher and therapist Bess Abrahams, with support from a private donor, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), and the non-profit therapeutic yoga center, the Breathing Project.

Slow Yoga
5:30 - 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays at H & D Physical Therapy (12 E 46th St, 8th fl) with Deborah Quilter

We live in a world of speed and stress, but our bodies need rest and relaxation to be healthy. Pushing ourselves to do more and more–even when we are tired or injured–leads to more fatigue and strain. Conversely, relaxing and releasing muscle tension energizes us and eases the body back to well-being. It also leads to better sleep, improved performance in athletic activities and greater flexibility.

This class employs gentle techniques from Yoga, Feldenkrais and other somatic modalities. It is so easy it feels almost lazy, yet paradoxically gives you a lift if you feel tired. You will learn to move more fluidly and easily. It also subtly tones, stretches and strengthens muscles, and can be deeply healing. You will work at your own pace, within your own capability. People with injuries need not worry about being pushed too far, nor do you have to be flexible or physically fit to participate. Beginners are welcome. Click here to download a flyer about the class. To register, call 212.499.0848 or email cperez-ruiz@hdphysicaltherapy.com.

a very basic class for beginners, or people who want a slower, more relaxed class - All classes include time for meditation and deep relaxation. New students are requested to call before coming to their first class. The Middle Path Yoga combines repetition with enough variety to keep the class interesting and informative. Students are encouraged to advance their practice as they are ready, and are offered more challenging variations as their skill increases. Props are used only as necessary for the individual student. Everyone is doing the same pose but not necessarily with the same props, or with props at all. Within the group, each student is treated as a unique individual. The poses are adapted to fit the person, the person is not forced to fit a variation of the pose that is not right for them at that moment. Middle Path Yoga also stresses the importance of breathing. Students learn to breath as they move, doing postures, and also learn sitting breathing techniques that can be used for stimulation and others that are used for meditation. Students learn how to adapt their breathing according to what they're trying to do. Over time, students become educated in many aspects of what it means to practice yoga.
