This list of NYC-area yoga studios includes gyms and other locations that specialize in yoga or offer several yoga classes as well as organizations that sponsor specific needs classes. Most gyms and community centers, as well as many spas, also offer yoga classes. There also are listings on MeetUp.com and craigslist.org. After the lists, organized by borough, are other NYC-area yoga resources. Listings at the site result from research and from people contacting the site; no fees are charged or accepted. The following NYC-based organizations offer training and programs for specific needs yoga.
- The Lineage Project
The Lineage Project teaches at-risk and incarcerated New York City teenagers awareness-based practices, such as yoga and meditation, to help consciously manage stress, increase self-awareness, and cultivate compassion and commitment to nonviolent engagement with their communities (and they train teachers to do this work).
- The Urban Zen Foundation
The Urban Zen Foundation offers two teacher training programs with well known experts in the field. The Urban Zen Integrative Therapist program is a 500-hr program focused on integrating multiple therapies—including yoga therapy, aromatherapy, reiki, nutrition, and education about death and dying—into patient care. A 200-hr teacher training program also is offered.
- Vajra Yoga of NYC Social Action Teacher Training
The Social Action Teacher Training was created to teach the skills necessary to effectively help others in specific populations such as those with mental and physical trauma, at-risk youth and adults, youth and adults in addiction recovery, and those living with chronic illness and pain. Training is offered for certified yoga teachers and also can be combined with Vajra Yoga's teacher training.
- Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scoliosis
All Yoga Union classes are adaptive (contact them to make sure the class is appropriate and that your needs can be accommodated) and it is the first yoga center to focus on backcare and scoliosis.
